Solar Battery Installation Cost in Australia

Updated October 2026 8 min read Smart Solar Energy

Two quotes for the same battery can sit thousands apart, and the gap almost always comes from the installation side. This guide breaks down what installation actually involves, what pushes the cost up, and what to check before you compare prices.

The short answer

Installation is usually priced as part of the total rather than as a separate line, and the battery unit is only one slice of it. Inverter work, switchboard condition, cable runs and backup wiring decide how far the final figure moves, which is why a fixed quote follows a site assessment rather than a phone call.

What installation actually includes

A battery doesn't just bolt to a wall. It has to be wired into your switchboard, paired with an inverter that can run it, and approved by your distributor before it switches on.

Mounting and enclosure

Wall or floor fixing, plus a rated enclosure if the unit is outdoors.

Inverter connection

A hybrid inverter, or AC coupling equipment where your current inverter stays.

Cabling and protection

Isolators, circuit breakers and cable sized for the battery's output.

Grid approval

Distributor application and sign-off before the system is energised.

Commissioning

Testing, settings, and monitoring app setup before handover.

Compliance paperwork

Electrical safety certificate and documentation for your records and insurer.

Where the money goes

The battery unit is the largest single item, though the remaining work adds up faster than most people expect.

What pushes installation cost up

An older switchboard

Many homes built before the 2000s have boards that can't take another circuit safely. Upgrading means new protection devices and sometimes a new board altogether. It's the most common surprise, and the reason a quote should state what happens if the board needs work.

Distance from the switchboard

A garage wall beside the meter box is the cheapest case. A battery on the far side of the property needs longer cable, more trenching or conduit, and more labour to run it.

Outdoor or exposed mounting

Where no sheltered wall exists, the unit needs a weatherproof enclosure and shading, because heat shortens battery life. Both add material and time.

Retrofitting to existing solar

Adding storage to a system already on the roof means either replacing the inverter with a hybrid unit or fitting an AC-coupled battery alongside it. Which is cheaper depends on your existing equipment, so both get compared during the assessment.

Questions to put to every installer
  • Does the quote include the inverter, or only the battery?
  • What happens to the price if the switchboard needs upgrading?
  • Is backup wiring included, and which circuits does it cover?
  • Who lodges the distributor application?
  • Which warranty applies to the installation itself, apart from the battery?
  • Is the battery and inverter combination on the approved list?

How the install day runs

1
Site check and isolation

The installer confirms the mounting spot, then isolates supply to the switchboard.

2
Mounting and wiring

The battery goes up, cabling is run, and the inverter work is completed.

3
Backup circuits

If backup was quoted, essential circuits are moved onto their own supply.

4
Testing and commissioning

The system is energised, tested under load, and set up in the monitoring app.

5
Handover

You get a walkthrough, the compliance certificate and your warranty paperwork.

Size it before you price it

Capacity drives the total more than any other choice. Our calculator shows how much storage your evening usage needs.

Rebates and the installed price

Federal STCs apply to the solar component rather than storage, and several states run their own battery programs with separate eligibility and funding caps. Because those open and close through the year, your position is checked against your address before a quote is prepared, so the price you see reflects what you can actually claim.

Frequently asked questions

Install costs, timing, switchboards and location.

How much does solar battery installation cost?

Installation is normally priced into the total rather than listed separately. It depends on whether your existing inverter can run a battery, the condition of your switchboard, the cable distance involved and whether you want blackout backup. A fixed quote follows a site assessment because none of those can be judged remotely.

Is installation included in the battery price?

It depends on the quote, which is why scope matters more than the headline figure. Some quotes cover the inverter, wiring and approvals while others leave them as variations added later. Ask for the full scope in writing before comparing totals.

How long does a solar battery installation take?

Most installs are completed in a day. Larger systems, three phase properties and jobs involving a switchboard upgrade or backup wiring can take longer. Distributor approval afterwards adds waiting time before the system is switched on.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for a battery?

Not always, though older boards often do. The installer checks capacity, protection devices and space for a new circuit during the assessment. If an upgrade is needed, a good quote discloses it upfront rather than adding it on the day.

Where can a solar battery be installed?

Usually a garage, laundry or an external wall in shade, within reach of the switchboard. Heat shortens battery life, so a west-facing wall in full afternoon sun is avoided, and Australian standards set clearance and ventilation requirements that the installer confirms on site.
