Shading is the main issue in Ringwood

Ringwood sits at the foot of the Dandenongs and has some of the heaviest tree cover in Melbourne's east. Large eucalypts on and around residential blocks are common, and many of them have been there longer than the houses.

That changes solar design more than anything else about the suburb. A roof that looks ideal at midday in December can sit in shadow for a third of the day in June, when the sun is lower and the trees on the neighbouring block reach across.

Why shading assessment matters here

On a standard string system, shade falling across one panel can drag output down across the whole string. Where shade cannot be avoided, panel selection and inverter type change — sometimes microinverters or optimisers, sometimes just a different array layout. That gets worked out on site, before the quote, rather than discovered after installation.

Ringwood's mixed housing and terrain

Ringwood proper has a lot of older brick and weatherboard homes around the town centre and the station, where switchboards often predate anything solar. Ringwood East and Ringwood North climb into hillier ground with larger blocks, two-storey homes and steeper roof pitches, which adds safety setup to the install.

Newer townhouse developments around Eastland and along Maroondah Highway are the opposite — modern boards, simple roofs, straightforward single-day jobs.

What we check on a Ringwood install

  • Tree shading mapped across the day and across seasons, not just at the time of visit
  • Switchboard age, particularly on older homes near the town centre
  • Roof pitch and access, which gets steeper through Ringwood North and East
  • Whether panel or inverter choice needs to change to cope with partial shade
  • Grid connection limits with your distributor before we quote

Other services in Ringwood

We are electricians as well as solar installers, so the rest of the electric home comes from the same team. Sizing them together matters — an EV charger or a heat pump changes what solar system your home actually needs.

Air conditioning

Split system and ducted air conditioning, sized so it can run off your own daytime generation rather than peak-rate power.

Heat pump hot water

Hot water is one of the biggest loads in the house. A heat pump shifts it onto daytime solar instead of the grid.

Rooftop systems for warehouses, factories and small business premises across Maroondah and the eastern suburbs.

Cost of solar in Ringwood

Installed cost depends on system size, roof type, switchboard condition and inverter choice. Ringwood sits slightly higher than the flat newer estates further south, because heavy shading sometimes calls for optimisers or microinverters, and the hillier streets add access time. Both are known at quote stage rather than added later.

All of Victoria falls in STC Zone 4, so the federal rebate is the same here as anywhere else in the state. It comes off your quoted price rather than being claimed back afterwards. The rebate calculator shows the figure for your system size.

How the install works

Consultation and site assessment, then a fixed quote with your rebate applied. We lodge the grid connection paperwork, install with CEC-accredited electricians, and set up your monitoring before we leave. Most single storey homes are completed in a day; two storey properties through Ringwood North can take two.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install solar in Ringwood?

Yes. Ringwood, Ringwood East, Ringwood North, Croydon, Heathmont and Mitcham are all part of our regular service area. We are based in Glen Waverley, about fifteen minutes away, so site assessments here are usually booked within a week.

My block has a lot of trees — is solar still worth it?

Usually yes, but the design changes. Where shade falls across part of the array through the day, panel choice and inverter type matter more than system size. We map shading during the assessment and design around it rather than quoting a standard system and hoping it performs.

Would microinverters suit a shaded Ringwood roof?

Sometimes. With one small inverter per panel, shading on a single panel does not drag down the rest of the array. They cost more upfront than a string inverter, so the decision comes down to how much shade there actually is — which is exactly what the site assessment establishes. See inverter options.

Will an older Ringwood home need a switchboard upgrade?

Homes built before around 1980, common around the town centre and the older streets, often do. We check the board at the site assessment and include any upgrade in the fixed quote rather than raising it later as a variation.

Do you install on two-storey homes?

Yes, and they are common through Ringwood North and East. Two-storey installs need more safety setup and can take two days rather than one, which is factored into the quote upfront.

Can I add a battery later?

Yes. If storage is anywhere in your plans, tell us at quote stage — fitting a hybrid inverter upfront is far cheaper than replacing a string inverter when the battery goes in.
