Solar Battery Melbourne
Store your daytime generation and run the evening peak on your own power instead of the grid.
Adding a solar battery means the power you generate during the day is still yours at night. Smart Solar Energy installs battery storage across Melbourne and regional Victoria using tier-one brands, fitted by CEC-accredited electricians and backed by a 25-year panel warranty and 10-year inverter warranty.
Why add a battery to your solar system
Without storage, most of your generation gets exported to the grid for a small feed-in tariff. That same energy is then bought back at peak rates in the evening, when the panels have stopped producing. A battery closes that gap.
Daytime generation is stored, then drawn down through the evening instead of being bought back from the grid.
Evening rates are the most expensive part of the bill. Storage lets you avoid that window almost entirely.
Where backup is configured at install, essential circuits keep running when the grid goes down.
A battery only pays off if the array feeding it is sized correctly in the first place. If you are starting from scratch, work out the solar panel system first, then match storage to it.
Solar battery brands we install
Every brand on this list has an established service presence in Australia, so a warranty claim in year eight is handled locally rather than sent overseas.
Modular stackable batteries that scale as your usage grows. A strong all-round choice for most homes.
Hybrid inverter and battery pairing with dependable backup performance and wide compatibility.
All-in-one storage units with built-in monitoring and strong local support.
One of the most widely deployed lithium battery brands worldwide, known for cycle life.
Competitive value storage with reliable hybrid inverter integration for retrofit installs.
Other tier-one batteries are available depending on stock and what suits your inverter.

Check compatible invertersWhat size battery do you need?
The right capacity comes down to how much of your evening usage you want covered. Oversizing wastes money, though undersizing leaves you buying peak power anyway.
Why modular capacity is worth considering
Stackable batteries let you start smaller and add capacity later without replacing the unit. Since household usage tends to grow — an EV, a heat pump, a home office — that flexibility often pays for itself.

Open the calculatorSolar battery cost and rebates
Installed cost scales with capacity, whether a hybrid inverter is needed, and how much backup wiring the switchboard requires. Two homes with the same battery can land on different prices for exactly those reasons.
What the rebate covers
Federal STC support applies to the solar component of a system rather than the battery itself. Several states run separate battery programs alongside it, each with their own eligibility rules and funding caps. Because those caps change through the year, your battery rebate eligibility gets checked before we quote, so the price you see already reflects what you can actually claim.
Retrofitting to an existing system
Adding storage to solar you already have is common, and there are two routes. Either a battery-compatible hybrid inverter replaces your current one, or an AC-coupled battery is installed alongside it. Which works out cheaper depends on your existing equipment, so both get compared during the assessment.
Our installation process
Your bills, existing solar setup and switchboard get reviewed to work out the right capacity.
You receive a fixed quote showing the battery, any inverter changes, and rebates already applied.
Grid connection paperwork is handled for you, then a date is booked that works around your week.
CEC-accredited installers complete the work, test the system and set up your monitoring app.
Ongoing support, warranty handling and performance checks for the life of the system.
Areas we service
Battery installations run across Melbourne and regional Victoria, including Cranbourne, Clyde, Dandenong, Frankston, Pakenham, Berwick and surrounding suburbs. Not sure if you're in range? Ask us.
Frequently asked questions
Costs, sizing, rebates, backup and retrofitting.
How much does a solar battery cost in Australia?
Installed cost scales with capacity, and a 10 kWh system is the most common choice for family homes. The final figure depends on whether a hybrid inverter is needed, how your switchboard is configured, and which rebates apply in your state. Rather than quoting a per-kWh estimate, we give you a fixed installed price after the site assessment.
What size solar battery do I need?
Capacity is matched to your evening usage, not your total daily usage. A home using 20 kWh a day with roughly 60% of that after 4pm needs around 12 kWh of usable storage, which usually means a 13.5 kWh battery. Our calculator gives you a starting figure in about 30 seconds.
Can I claim a rebate on a solar battery?
Several states run battery-specific incentive programs alongside federal STC support for the solar component. Eligibility, funding caps and closing dates change regularly, so what applies to your address gets checked before quoting. See Victorian solar rebates for the current position.
Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?
Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs we do. Depending on your current inverter, either a battery-compatible hybrid inverter goes in, or an AC-coupled battery is installed alongside your existing setup. The site assessment determines which approach costs less.
Will a battery keep my power on during a blackout?
Only where backup has been specifically configured during installation. Not every battery and inverter combination supports it, and backup usually covers selected essential circuits rather than the whole home. Mention it early and the system gets designed around it.

How long does a solar battery last?
Modern lithium batteries are rated in charge cycles rather than years, and most quality units carry a warranty of around ten years of daily cycling. Capacity fades gradually rather than failing outright, so a battery at year ten still works, just with slightly less usable storage than when new.
Do I need a hybrid inverter for a battery?
Not always. A hybrid inverter runs solar and storage from one unit, which is the cleaner setup if you’re installing both together. Where solar is already in place, an AC-coupled battery can work alongside your existing inverter instead. Both options get costed during the assessment.
How much of my bill will a battery actually remove?
That depends on how much of your usage falls after sunset. A home using most of its power in the evening sees the biggest change, while a household that runs everything during the day is already using its solar directly and gains less from storage.
Can I go completely off grid with a battery?
For most Melbourne homes, no. Going off grid needs far more storage and generation than a typical residential system, plus a backup generator for consecutive overcast days. Staying grid connected with a battery gives you most of the benefit at a fraction of the cost.
Where does the battery get installed?
Usually a garage, laundry or an external wall in shade. Heat shortens battery life, so a west-facing wall in full afternoon sun gets avoided. Clearance and ventilation requirements are set by Australian standards, and we confirm a compliant position during the site visit.
Is a solar battery safe?
Batteries installed to Australian standards sit in approved locations with required clearances, and every unit we fit has been certified for the Australian market. The lithium chemistries used in home storage are chosen for thermal stability rather than maximum energy density.
Do batteries need maintenance?
Very little. There are no moving parts and no fluids to top up. Monitoring through the app flags any issue, and we run performance checks as part of ongoing support.
What happens when the battery is full?
Excess generation flows to the grid as it would without storage, earning your feed-in tariff. Nothing gets wasted — the battery simply stops charging once it reaches capacity.
