Victoria Solar Rebate 2026: Who Qualifies and How to Claim

Updated October 2026 9 min read Smart Solar Energy

Victorian households can combine a federal discount that every eligible system receives with a state rebate that comes with its own conditions. The state rules changed on 1 July 2026, and the program is scheduled to move into a different scheme in 2027. This guide explains who qualifies, how the discount is worked out and what to avoid.

The short answer

In 2026, a Victorian home can receive federal certificates on every eligible solar system, plus a Solar Victoria rebate of up to $1,400 if the household qualifies. The state rebate is worth half of the price that remains after certificates, up to that cap, and it is taken off your invoice. To qualify you must own and live in the property, with combined taxable income under $150,000 and a property value under $3 million.

What is available in Victoria

There are three separate pieces of support. The first applies to everyone, and the other two depend on your household.

Federal certificates (STCs)

Every eligible system earns small-scale technology certificates. Victoria sits in the lowest sunlight zone, and the number falls each year until the scheme closes in 2030.

Solar Victoria rebate

Up to $1,400 for eligible owner-occupiers, calculated after certificates and taken off the invoice. Rebates are released in limited batches.

Interest-free loan

An optional loan of up to the same amount, chosen when you apply and repaid monthly over four years, for households that want to spread the cost.

How the rebate is worked out

The order matters, because the state rebate is calculated on the price left after certificates, not on the original quote.

Who qualifies for the Solar Victoria rebate

You need to meet every one of these conditions. At the time of writing they are:

  • You own and live in the property, or you own a home under construction
  • Combined taxable income of all owners is under $150,000 a year
  • The property is valued under $3 million
  • The address has not already received a Solar Homes solar or battery rebate
  • No solar system has been installed at the address in the last 10 years
  • You use an authorised retailer and eligible products

There is no minimum or maximum system size, only a cap on the rebate itself. Solar Victoria publishes the latest conditions on its solar panel rebate page, and we check them against your household before quoting.

What changed on 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026 the combined household income limit is $150,000. Households above that line no longer qualify for the state rebate, even where they met the earlier conditions. Federal certificates are unaffected, so every eligible system still receives them whatever the household income.

The program is moving in 2027

Solar Victoria has said that support will transition into the Victorian Energy Upgrades program from 1 July 2027. Eligible households can keep applying for the remaining rebates until then. More rebates are released each month, so availability can change from week to week.

Timing: what catches people out

The state rebate has a strict sequence, and installing too early is the most common mistake.

  • Your retailer needs approval to connect and export from the network distributor before the quote is submitted
  • Eligibility has to be approved before installation, and a system installed earlier receives no rebate
  • Installation must be completed within the window Solar Victoria sets after approval
  • The rebate is paid to your retailer and deducted from your invoice, so you do not claim it back yourself
What to check before you sign
  • Is the retailer authorised to apply the Solar Victoria rebate?
  • Does each discount appear as its own line, with certificates shown separately?
  • Have they confirmed your income, property value and rebate history?
  • When will the application be approved, and who confirms it before installation?
  • What happens to the quote if a rebate release runs out before approval?

Frequently asked questions

Amounts, eligibility, existing systems, the loan and timing.

How much is the Victoria solar rebate in 2026?

Solar Victoria offers a rebate of up to $1,400. It is worked out as 50% of the system price after other discounts, including federal certificates, and capped at that amount. On top of that, every eligible system earns federal small-scale technology certificates, which are taken off the price by your installer.

Who is eligible for the Victorian solar rebate?

You need to own and live in the property, or own a home under construction. Combined taxable income of all owners must be under $150,000, and the property must be valued under $3 million. The address must not have received a Solar Homes solar or battery rebate before, and you must use an authorised retailer and eligible products. Check Solar Victoria for the latest rules.

Can I get the rebate if I already have solar panels?

Not if a solar system has been installed at the address in the last 10 years. Solar Victoria's conditions exclude addresses that already have a system in that period, as well as addresses that have previously received a solar or battery rebate under the program.

Is the Victorian interest-free solar loan still available?

Solar Victoria offers an optional interest-free loan of up to $1,400, which you choose when you apply. It is repaid in monthly instalments over four years. Check Solar Victoria for current terms before you commit.

Can I install my system before the rebate is approved?

No. If a system is installed before eligibility is approved, there is no rebate. Your retailer needs approval first, and installation then has to be completed within the time window Solar Victoria sets. We manage the application so the timing does not catch you out.
