Installed cost scales with capacity, whether a hybrid inverter is needed, and how much backup wiring the switchboard requires. Two homes with the same battery can land on different prices for exactly those reasons.

What the rebate covers

Federal STC support applies to the solar component of a system rather than the battery itself. Several states run separate battery programs alongside it, each with their own eligibility rules and funding caps. Because those caps change through the year, your battery rebate eligibility gets checked before we quote, so the price you see already reflects what you can actually claim.

Retrofitting to an existing system

Adding storage to solar you already have is common, and there are two routes. Either a battery-compatible hybrid inverter replaces your current one, or an AC-coupled battery is installed alongside it. Which works out cheaper depends on your existing equipment, so both get compared during the assessment.

How much does a solar battery cost in Australia?

Installed cost scales with capacity, and a 10 kWh system is the most common choice for family homes. The final figure depends on whether a hybrid inverter is needed, how your switchboard is configured, and which rebates apply in your state. Rather than quoting a per-kWh estimate, we give you a fixed installed price after the site assessment.

What size solar battery do I need?

Capacity is matched to your evening usage, not your total daily usage. A home using 20 kWh a day with roughly 60% of that after 4pm needs around 12 kWh of usable storage, which usually means a 13.5 kWh battery. Our calculator gives you a starting figure in about 30 seconds.

Can I claim a rebate on a solar battery?

Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?

Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs we do. Depending on your current inverter, either a battery-compatible hybrid inverter goes in, or an AC-coupled battery is installed alongside your existing setup. The site assessment determines which approach costs less.

Will a battery keep my power on during a blackout?

Only where backup has been specifically configured during installation. Not every battery and inverter combination supports it, and backup usually covers selected essential circuits rather than the whole home. Mention it early and the system gets designed around it.

How long does a solar battery last?

Modern lithium batteries are rated in charge cycles rather than years, and most quality units carry a warranty of around ten years of daily cycling. Capacity fades gradually rather than failing outright, so a battery at year ten still works, just with slightly less usable storage than when new.

Not always. A hybrid inverter runs solar and storage from one unit, which is the cleaner setup if you’re installing both together. Where solar is already in place, an AC-coupled battery can work alongside your existing inverter instead. Both options get costed during the assessment.

That depends on how much of your usage falls after sunset. A home using most of its power in the evening sees the biggest change, while a household that runs everything during the day is already using its solar directly and gains less from storage.

For most Melbourne homes, no. Going off grid needs far more storage and generation than a typical residential system, plus a backup generator for consecutive overcast days. Staying grid connected with a battery gives you most of the benefit at a fraction of the cost.
